4 University Level Music Courses Starting in July

This is huge!!

I have written blog posts about free online learning before.  I believe most of my audience is into learning new skills or just starting out. These courses coming up in July are sure to have something for everyone on every level. Berklee College, Emory University and the University of Edinburgh are all offering music related courses!

This is our opportunity to learn new techniques or new skills from real professionals. With it being free and online there is no real reason to miss out. Berklee College – Introduction to Music Production

Learn about the music production process—including recording, editing, and mixing—and the tools available to you to create contemporary music on your computer.

About the Course:

With the recent introduction of high-quality-low-cost software and hardware, the tools of music production are now available to the masses. Albums are made in bedrooms as well as studios. On the surface this is liberating. Anyone can make an album for the low cost of a couple pieces of gear and a software package. But, if you dig deeper, you will find that it is not so easy. Producing music requires knowledge, dedication, and creativity.

Berklee College – Developing Your Musicianship

Learn the basic concepts and approaches needed to understand, create, and perform contemporary music.

About the Course:

If you have a passion for music and are curious about how it works, or if you are a musician who learned to play by ear without formal study, this course will provide you with an engaging introduction to key concepts and approaches needed to understand, create, and perform contemporary music. Taught by Berklee College of Music professor George W. Russell, Jr., the course includes six lessons that delve into harmony and ear training—two areas of intensive focus for every entering Berklee student.

Emory University – Introduction to Digital Sound Design

Sounds and music are embedded in almost every aspect of daily life. This course will provide an overview of the fundamental principles of sound and the factors that determine our audio perception. It will also explore techniques of recording, mixing, processing, synthesis, sampling, analysis, and editing of digital audio.

About the Course:

This course will provide an overview of the fundamental principles of sound and the factors that determine our audio perception. It will explore techniques of recording, mixing, processing, synthesis, sampling, analysis, and editing of digital audio using freely distributed audio production software for both PC and Mac. Students will also learn an array of sound design and editing techniques for use in film and web-based media, art installations, soundscape creations, or live and internet music performances.

Univeristy of Edinburgh – Fundamentals of Music Theory

This course will introduce students to the theory of music, providing them with the skills needed to read and write Western music notation, as well as to understand, analyse, and listen informedly. It will cover material such as pitches and scales, intervals, clefs, rhythm, form, meter, phrases and cadences, and basic harmony.

About the Course:

This course is suitable for those who have never studied music academically. It will introduce you to the theory of Western music, providing you with the skills needed to read and write Western music notation, as well as to understand, analyse, and listen informedly.
